Quiz Review: Holystone Quiz, Silverlink

Pub: The Holystone
Night: Tuesday Nights 8.30pm

It has been a year in which I have been mainly sticking to tried and tested quizzes, but due to the Newcastle/Brighton game last night a lot of local quizzes were cancelled and I stumbled upon The Holystone. The pub is in a village just North of the Tyne Tunnel and the Quiz Runs every Tuesday at 8.30pm.

The Format of the Quiz is quite simple...10 question picture round and then 4 rounds of 10. There were around 7 teams in, but the host did announce there was usually more but attendance had been hit by the football.

The quiz itself started well with the picture round which was well pitched and put together with some care. In fact, whilst sticking with the positives there was a good solid Geography Round and the Connections round was very well done.

But....I am sure you will agree...when the quizmaster says "Round 1...Family Fortunes", you start to have doubts. Add to the mix that there was 2 points per top answer here (with the Geo and GK rounds only 1 point per question) and you have a quiz that hinges on this. 20 out of the 70 points on offer are for Family Fortunes knowledge. The only other round to match up was the music mash up round....two tracks played together, identify both artists.  Another 20 points on offer in this round.

The quiz is popular, and the size of the jackpot (which we won) suggests plenty of people usually take part, but the inclusion of an overweight Family Fortunes and the music round which favoured younger teams like us massively was a bit of a let down.

We did win the quiz on a tiebreak, and then took the jackpot (so don't think we were the most popular people in the pub that night) but I don't think I will venture back for the quiz night.

The pub itself is lovely and I do look forward to going back to the Holystone for the meal using the vouchers we won in the quiz itself.

So, carrying on from my poll last year that leaves my current Quiz Night Rankings at -
