15 to 1

Channel 4 have snuck 15 to 1 back on our screens this week at 3pm. Almost missed it as it appears to have not ben advertised too well either online or on TV, but regardless, tis good to have it back.

Also as a side note, all of the episodes from the Sandi Toksvig era are on ALL 4 available to stream or download which is handy :)

Quiz Review - Southside Social Club, Easington Village

Venue: Southside Social Club, Easington Village
Tuesday Nights
9pm

I have managed to do quite a bit of quizzing in 2017 thus far, but mainly at regular quizzes I attend so it has been a while since I added a new quiz review. Last Tuesday, I tried out the Southside Social Club quiz in Easington Village, a free to enter quiz which has been running a number of years.

The first thing to mention about this quiz is the simple format.....and for me, simple is often best. No complicated jokers, wipeout rounds or such like. Just a straight forward 50 question quiz with a picture round. And for that factor, I enjoyed it very much. The quiz is done and dusted in 70 minutes or so, with prizes of pint cheques for first, second and last and its a friendly cheat-free atmosphere.

There were only 4 teams competing this week, our team of 3 and then each of the other teams had upwards of 7 players so although teams were low, there were plenty of people actually in the pub.

The questions were basic pub quiz style questions, a few chestnuts and a wide selection of interesting "I should know this...." style questions. Players mark other teams papers (I always enjoy doing this to see what other people know/don't know and seeing where the quiz was won or lost) and its a straight forward, hassle free quiz night!

Well worth a look if you are in the area on Tuesday Nights.

Book Suggestions

This has been on my shelf for some time and only just got around to reading it this week. Tom Bromley has wrote a number of fun books on 70's and 80's pop culture and they all are well worth seeking out. Wired for Sound covers the 1980s pop scene and within its pages are a treasure trove of good facts, stories and material for questions. It is written as Tom's account of the era so does have opinion etc within it. It's a fairly straight forward read that I certainly managed to get not only a few questions out of but enjoyed a lot.

Another book to recommend from my reading this year would be Adventures in Human Being by Gavin Francis. This is written by a former GP and takes a half informative/half personal tale through the human body. Containing everything from technical descriptions of how the body functions, to previous cultural and literal beliefs about the body down to some really gruesome, yet informative, tales of his own times in practice. Well worth a read!

Pub Aid - Worlds Biggest Pub Quiz

They have done a superb job advertising this on social media, so chances are you have seen it already, but Pub Aid is running the Worlds Biggest Pub Quiz on March 5th and it sounds fun. You can see a list of registered pubs on the site listed in the Poster and by the looks of it there are nearly 600 pubs on boards. In Sunderland alone there seems to 5-6 quizzes running so I am sure there will be a venue near you!

Quiz Book Review

I went on something of an insane quiz book buying mission last year....the one thing I didn't manage to do was sit down and work my way through them. This year I have decided to try and work through as many of them as I can.

I think I picked up the Judith Keppel Quiz Book for about 20p from a Charity Shop. It contains 1000 multiple choice questions roughly split into 4 - Easy, Medium, Hard and Very Tough. It was released within the year Judith won the Big Prize on Millionaire and feels very rushed with some amusing mistakes. The other downside is the annoying layout with the answers at the back on large lists with just the letter of the answer listed. Annoying!

Out of the whole book I did pick up a few dozen good questions but on the whole, unless you see it for a similar price, it isn't worth going out of your way to track down.
