Brain of Britain - Round 1 - Match 8

Brain of Britain - Round 1 - Match 8

As mentioned in a post a few days ago, today is an excellent day for TV/Radio Quizzing fans and it all began with one of the most enjoyable quizzes out there at present, Brain of Britain on Radio 4.

This weeks contenders were....

Nada Vekri
Rob Milnes
Stephen Porter
Cyndi Stevens

The eight heat of Brain of Britain got under way with Rob Milnes setting the early pace taking Vekri's point and a couple of his own, being gifted an easy Gazza question. He took 4 points to lead the heat by 2 after round one. A high scoring second round saw Rob Milnes head to 11 points and take command and gained further, moving to 12 in the next round with the closest competitor on 4. A very impressive opening indeed and another contender for the Brain of Britain title was emerging.

The usual listeners questions posed a challenge to the contenders, scoring only one out of the two this week with a very very tough question about defunct railway stations.

Into round 4 and the business end of Brain of Britain with Rob Milnes seemingly uncatchable on the form he was showing. I did not know Guyana was known as The Land of Many Waters, neither did the contestants nor did they know the largest island in the Baltic sea. Nobody was showing any signs of catching Milnes. A couple of rounds passed with some hitty missy answering from hall and Milnes moving to an 8 point lead with under 5 minutes to go.

Nobody knew that Ascension Day is the day for the strange tradition of Beating the Bounds and I didnt know a fanzine called Sniffing the Glue had focused on Punk. Scoring was low again, Milnes picked up a steal and by this point was 9 ahead and showing one of the most confident performances in Brain of Britain 2012.

In the last round Vekri got a good question on the date of the first census (1801) but failed on moon's planets to give Milnes another point but he couldn't add to his total. Stephen Porter new that Charles II was the first to appoint a Poet Laureate but by now everyone was clear Rob Milnes was the winner. A very solid performance!

Final standings....

Rob Milnes - 18
Nada Vekri - 11
Stephen Porter - 7
Cyndi Stevens - 6

Another great episode of Brain of Britain and an excellent start to proceedings on a quiz packed night. Listening to Brain of Britain 2012 unfold is going to be very interesting indeed.
